Lemkin Institute: Red Alert for Genocide against Alawites in Syria

VIENNA. The Turkish Cultural Community in Austria (TKG Think Tank) has made a dramatic appeal to the UN, the EU, the US, Russia and Syria’s neighbouring countries.

The scream of the Alevi boy whose family was massacred in Syria, Latakia, on March 14, 2025!

In its press release under the title „Lemkin Institute: Red Alert for Genocide in Syria: Ethnic Cleansing and Violence against Alawites‘ and added: ‚TKG is considering taking the case to the International Court of Justice in The Hague‘.

The key passage of TKG’s message to the world is as follows

The Lemkin Institute on Genocide Prevention (Lemkin Institute) is a multinational NGO based in the United States. It describes its mission as „connecting the global grassroots with the tools of genocide prevention“ and now warns:

„Red Alert for Syrian Genocide – Ethnic Cleansing and Violence against Alawites“.  The Lemkin Institute statement reads: „The Institute is issuing an urgent Red Flag Alert for Syria due to the critical risk of genocide against Syrians of the Alawite sect in the coastal region of Syria. Numerous videos and reports have now emerged of the execution of dozens of unarmed civilians, including women, children, the elderly and infants, by fighters from the newly formed Syrian Interim Government General Security and armed groups associated with the officially disbanded militant group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian National Army (SNA). In these videos, men are publicly tortured, humiliated and forced to bark before being executed. The third group of images and videos show bodies lying in the streets of neighbourhoods and towns with large Alawite populations, including Baniyas, al-Mukhtariya, al-Tuwaym, al-Haffah, al-Datour (Latakia) and Jableh. An eyewitness in Latakia described scenes of „bodies in the streets“ and how armed groups killed 150 people in a single neighbourhood. In addition, pro-HTS channels on social media (e.g. Telegram) mocked the dead by offering for sale the heads of members of the Alawite community (the images are no longer available due to a violation of Telegram’s terms of service). Another video shows Syrian forces celebrating the killing of at least 20 people, mostly men, in various states of undress. Most of the bodies are lined up face down in a room in the street“. Read here On behalf of the Turkish Cultural Community (TKG Thin Tank), we call on the EU, the UN, the US, Syria’s neighbours and Russia to stop this genocide, which can be seen live on social media and is a disgrace to humanity in the 21st century. They are complicit.“

„Setting the fox to keep the geese“ – HTS quackery

HTS has appointed Enes Ayrut, the Governor of Tartous, to investigate. He is a member of the HTS fatwa organisation. The HTS fatwa organisation, through Enes Ayrut, defines the Alawites as „apostates who must be slaughtered“. HTS has entrusted the investigation of the Alawite genocide to the person who said that „the massacre of Alawites is obligatory“. HTS put the fox in charge of the henhouse. It was immediately clear that HTS would not investigate the massacres, identify and punish the perpetrators, but on the contrary would cover up the genocide.

The Turkish Cultural Community in Austria TKG is considering going to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Why is the Lemkin Institute important?

The term genocide was coined in 1944 by the Polish-Jewish lawyer Raphael Lemkin. It refers to the total or partial destruction of a particular group on the basis of its national, ethnic, racial or religious identity. In December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The Convention defines five acts which, alone or in combination, may constitute genocide and are judged by the UN and the Hague Tribunals.

Killing members of a religious, sectarian or national group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group, in whole or in part, conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction; taking measures to prevent births within the group; forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

The Convention also made it clear that attempts to commit genocide, incitement to commit genocide and complicity in genocide are punishable under the Convention. There have been many other genocides since 1945.
